CS2 replaced CS:GO in 2023 and brought major engine changes. Here are the specs and how to maximize FPS for competitive play.

What Is Counter-Strike 2?

Counter-Strike 2 is Valve's 2023 overhaul of CS:GO, built on Source 2 engine. It replaced CS:GO completely on Steam — if you owned CS:GO, it updated automatically. CS2 brings improved graphics, sub-tick server architecture, volumetric smoke grenades that react to gunfire, and overhauled audio.

CS2 PC Requirements

Minimum:
  • CPU: Dual-core 2.8+ GHz processor
  • GPU: GPU with 256 MB VRAM, DirectX 11 support
  • RAM: 8 GB
  • Storage: 85 GB
  • OS: Windows 10 (64-bit)
Recommended:
  • CPU: Quad-core 3.2+ GHz
  • GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1060 / AMD RX 580
  • RAM: 16 GB
  • Storage: 85 GB NVMe SSD
Competitive (144–240 FPS):
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X / Intel Core i5-12600K
  • GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3060 / AMD RX 6600
  • RAM: 16 GB DDR4

Source 2 Performance Characteristics

CS2 on Source 2 is more demanding than CS:GO on Source 1 but offers more consistent frame pacing. The game scales better across CPU cores than its predecessor. Shader compilation was a significant issue at launch — the game compiled shaders in the background on first start, causing stuttering. Ensure shader precompilation completes before your first competitive match.

Competitive Settings

  • Set all quality options to Low
  • Disable Multisampling Anti-Aliasing (set to None)
  • Enable FXAA (minimal performance cost)
  • Disable V-Sync
  • Set FPS cap to your monitor's refresh rate + a buffer (160 for a 144 Hz monitor)
  • Boost: cl_autohelp 0; net_client_steamdatagram_enable_override 1
