About GTA V and GTA Online

Grand Theft Auto V (Rockstar Games, 2013/2015) is an open-world crime action game set in the fictional city of Los Santos (based on Los Angeles). GTA Online is the free multiplayer extension included with GTA V. Despite being over 10 years old, GTA V remains in the top 10 most-played PC games due to constant GTA Online content updates.

• Storage: NVMe SSD (recommended for online)

Notorious Performance Settings

GTA V has a few settings with outsized performance impact:

• Grass Quality: Ultra grass is very GPU-intensive. Set to Normal for a significant performance gain
• Extended Distance Scaling: Costs performance for long-distance detail. Set to 0–25% unless you have a powerful GPU
• MSAA: Use FXAA or no AA instead of MSAA 4x+ for much better performance
• Population Density: Can cause CPU spikes in busy areas

Online Loading

GTA Online's notoriously long loading times were partially fixed in 2021 after a community developer found a JSON parsing bug. Enabling "Faster Loading" in the pause menu settings should dramatically reduce GTA Online loading times.
