How Monitors Work: Resolution, Refresh Rate, and Response Time Explained

Resolution: How Many Pixels?
Resolution describes how many pixels your monitor displays:- 1080p (Full HD): 1920×1080 = ~2.1 million pixels
- 1440p (2K/QHD): 2560×1440 = ~3.7 million pixels
- 4K (UHD): 3840×2160 = ~8.3 million pixels
Refresh Rate: How Smooth?
The refresh rate (measured in Hz) tells you how many times per second the monitor updates its image:- 60 Hz: Standard; fine for casual gaming
- 144 Hz: The competitive gaming standard — noticeably smoother than 60 Hz
- 165–240 Hz: For fast-paced competitive games (CS2, Valorant)
- 360 Hz: Professional esports use
Response Time
Response time measures how quickly a pixel can change color, in milliseconds (ms). Lower is better for fast movement:- 1 ms: IPS and TN panels with MBR/overdrive technology
- 4–5 ms: Budget IPS panels
Panel Types
- TN: Fastest response, cheapest, but poor color and viewing angles
- IPS: Best colors and viewing angles, good response times
- VA: High contrast ratio, some motion blur in fast scenes
- OLED: Perfect blacks, instant response, expensive
