Path of Exile PC Requirements: The Free ARPG That Demands a Fast CPU
Path of Exile is a free-to-play action RPG with some of the deepest build systems in gaming. Here are the specs and why your CPU matters more than you think.
What Is Path of Exile?
Path of Exile (PoE) is a free-to-play isometric action RPG by Grinding Gear Games. Players fight through a dark fantasy world, build complex character builds from a massive skill tree, and progress through Acts and end-game "Maps." Path of Exile 2 is in active development as of 2024.PC Requirements
Minimum:- CPU: Intel Quad-core, AMD Quad-core
- GPU: NVIDIA GTX 650 Ti / AMD Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition
- RAM: 8 GB
- Storage: 40 GB SSD
- CPU: Intel Core i7-7700 / AMD Ryzen 7 1700
- GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1070 / AMD Radeon RX 5700
- RAM: 16 GB
- Storage: 40 GB SSD
Why Path of Exile Is CPU-Intensive
PoE uses a DirectX 11 renderer that is notably single-threaded. When dozens of enemies, projectiles, and effects fill the screen simultaneously (which happens constantly in end-game builds), the CPU's single-core performance becomes the bottleneck. "Delirium" map encounters with hundreds of monsters can drop frame rates dramatically on slower CPUs while the GPU barely breaks a sweat.Shader Compilation and Stuttering
PoE compiles shaders on first encounter with new visual effects. This causes stuttering when entering new map areas for the first time. The shader cache fills over several hours of play, and stuttering diminishes significantly after the cache is populated.Common Optimization Adjustments
- Reduce particle count and effects quality for end-game heavy builds
- Enable Vulkan renderer (Settings > Display) for improved CPU multi-threading
- Allocate more virtual memory if you experience crashes
