World of Warcraft PC Requirements: The MMO That Defined a Generation

WoW has been running since 2004 and still has millions of players. Here are the current PC requirements for retail and Classic.

World of Warcraft (Retail) PC Requirements

Minimum (1080p, Low):
  • CPU: Intel Core i5-3450 / AMD FX-8300
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 (4 GB) / AMD Radeon RX 470 (4 GB)
  • RAM: 8 GB
  • Storage: 100 GB SSD
  • OS: Windows 10 64-bit
Recommended (1080p, High):
  • CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K / AMD Ryzen 5 2600X
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 / AMD RX Vega 64
  • RAM: 16 GB

WoW Classic Requirements

WoW Classic (2004 content) is less demanding than retail. The old game world was designed for 2004 hardware. However, the Classic client runs on the modern WoW engine: Minimum (Classic):
  • CPU: Intel Core i5-760 / AMD Ryzen 3 1200
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 / AMD Radeon HD 7850
  • RAM: 4 GB

Raid Performance

WoW's performance in large 20–40 player raids depends heavily on CPU. Older CPUs can struggle with the sheer number of players, spell effects, and animations on screen simultaneously. Single-core performance (not core count) is the primary factor.

The DirectX 12 Option

WoW supports DirectX 12 which can improve CPU multi-threading utilization. In high player-count scenarios (raids, capital cities), DX12 can reduce CPU bottlenecks measurably.
